BEC hosts two community gardens in Chico.
How it all got started
In 2011, BEC began working with the City of Chico to establish a community garden on unimproved city land across from Marsh Jr. High School. The city purchased the land for a park over twenty years ago, and a portion is currently being used as a storm water retention basin. After a lot of help from city staff and members of the community, we were able to strike a deal. In spring 2012 BEC signed a lease with the City of Chico to use the property for a community garden.
Since then, due to the success of what became the Humboldt Community Garden, BEC has worked hard to expand garden access to the community. In addition to donating large group plots to the ARC of Butte County, and to Veterans' Affairs, BEC secured another Garden space at 8th Ave. and Highway 32.
We're so happy to be able to recognize, share, and celebrate the incredible power of our soil and climate to provide us with the plants that we humans love; food, flowers, and medicine. Putting our hands in the dirt has the power to heal our hearts and minds, and bind us to the cycles of nature--and each other. Join us in this great community project.
