Support Letter from the Sierra Club

I am writing on behalf of the Sierra Club, Yahi Group, to express our appreciation to Butte Environmental Council for protecting Butte County wetlands as reported in your Thursday article.

These are sensitive lands; all concerned know that they are to be managed comprehensively. Attempting to split out one parcel to be developed separately is bad ecology, and therefore bad for Chico. Comprehensive resource management is central to applicable state and federal regulations. It would appear that the developer's proposal would not meet regulations.

The appeal by BEC will ensure that the proposed action is fully reviewed and would proceed only if legal. It is surprising that there would be opposition to BEC's appeal, and, particularly, that the opposition would come from the Chamber of Commerce. One would think that conformance to regulations, which is at the heart of our commercial system - and at the heart of this issue - would be fully supported by the chamber.
