A Brief History

Environmental News serves as a voice for environmental issues by informing readers about upcoming events and local environmental issues. The first newsletter was a letter to Butte County residents explaining the new organization with two brief articles. It was titled Butte Environmental Cooperative and published in May 1975. BECs founders and early supporters are extremely proud of Homegrown, the subsequent newsletter. Kelly Meagher, general manager in 1989 wrote articles for Homegrown under the pseudoname Chester Orland. In 1988 Scott Chandler, a graphic designer, took over production of the newsletter and titled it Membergram. Chandler contributed his time and services to Membergram for seven years.

In the past, BEC’s newsletter was printed primarily for members, with few copies reaching outside the membership. BEC now serves a much broader audience, with a printing run of 6,000 copies per issue.
