Job Description: The Humboldt Community Garden and Oakway Community Garden are projects of the Butte Environmental Council. In partnership with the City of Chico two lots of land were converted into gardens with individual garden plots available for community members to rent. The Garden Coordinator would help with any and all aspects of the garden, and  would receive direction and mentoring from BEC Executive Director.  Work setting would be a mix of in-office administrative tasks with significant time spent outdoors at the garden site. Tasks would involve: communicating via phone/email with BEC staff, garden committee members, existing garden members or any interested new members; helping with fundraising; organizing garden work days; publicizing the garden through social media, posters, tabling or other creative strategies; organizing gardening workshops; maintaining content on info kiosk; participating in the quarterly garden committee meetings; signing up new gardeners; ensuring that the garden rules are being followed through regular inspections and noticing; and communicating garden issues to BEC staff and garden committee members.
Qualifications: This is primarily an administrative role that requires good communication and organization. The most important duties are managing phone and email correspondence promptly and keeping good records. Administrative, event planning or leadership experience is valuable. Of course it helps if you love gardening and don't mind getting dirty. Other desired skills include: Knowledge of irrigation systems, plants (both native & non-native), basic repair skills, etc. Overall, the ideal candidate is willing to make a commitment, maintain positive communication with everyone involved, and brings enthusiasm and passion into this project.
Availability: We are looking for someone who is available in the Chico area for a minimum of July 2017 to December 2017. But the ideal person for the role will be available for up to a year.
How to Apply: Submit a letter of interest and a resume via email to
Candidates will interview with the Executive Director to assess qualifications, availability, and interests. This internship could be an ideal place to fulfill a course requirement but is also a valuable opportunity to gain experience for a resume-builder or to fulfill a personal passion.
