The Next Generation Water Stewardship project empowers youth and protects salmon habitat in two Butte County communities by expanding access to the Classroom Aquarium Education Program (CAEP) and providing hands-on workforce development experiences. The project will equip fifteen classrooms in Chapmantown and Thermalito with aquaria and curriculum materials so students can raise and release Chinook Salmon and steelhead trout while learning about watershed health and salmon’s critical role in the ecosystem. A parallel series of youth development activities, in partnership with local agencies and nonprofits, will equip fifth/sixth graders with workforce skills including public speaking, participatory science, and riparian restoration. An additional 220 second/fourth graders will rear salmon and steelhead eggs and learn about their life cycles.
Project goals are:
- Empower youth in disadvantaged communities through watershed stewardship and workforce development focused on salmon recovery
- To improve water quality and salmon habitat through cleanups and riparian restoration.
